Kyo Wazarashi Mensya: Traditional Japanese Cotton Gauze from Kyoto

Kyo Wazarashi Mensya is our original gauze product series.

Wazarashi is a traditional Japanese method of scouring cotton that gently removes impurities such as oils, waxes, minerals, and other natural substances while preserving the natural structure of the cotton fibers.

Why Does the Wazarashi Process Take Four Days?

Conventional industrial scouring processes can remove impurities from cotton in as little as 40–80 minutes.

Wazarashi scouring process, on the other hand, takes 4 days to remove those natural impurities without damaging the fiber structure, making it even softer and fluffier than other gauze products.

Cotton gauze processed with the Wazarashi process displays a beautifully rounded shape in the cross-section view of the cotton fiber. The preserved fiber structure creates a layer of air, making the cotton highly moisture-absorbent and breathable.

Why Is Japanese Cotton Gauze So Soft and Breathable?

Often, double-layered gauze products are tacked together with small stitches in between to prevent the fabric from shifting during sewing.

However, we sew double-layered, and even triple-layered, gauze without tacking each layer. Despite the difficulty, we assemble the gauze layers with great care, relying on years of professional craftsmanship.

This is how we craft our gauze products. By creating wider space between the layers, our gauze is not only more breathable, but also retains warmth much better.

Scientifically Evaluated Comfort

The characteristics of Kyo Wazarashi Mensya have also been evaluated using the KES fabric evaluation system in collaboration with the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

In the total hand value of texture, the results indicate that Japanese WAZARASHI MENSYA gauze suppresses "roughness" and enhances "softness," while the overall evaluation of the fabric improves after washing.

These data clearly show that the more KYO WAZARASHI MENSYA gauze is washed, the fluffier it becomes on the skin.
