How to Care for Your Watoji Futon

During sleep, the human body produces around 1 cup (200 mL) of sweat.
Although cotton filling is highly absorbent, it does not easily release moisture. If a futon is left unattended over time, this retained moisture can create conditions that promote the growth of mold and dust mites within the futon.
For your hygiene and comfort, please refer to the instructions and suggestions listed below.
- For long-term use, please fold your futon mattress daily and maintain good airflow to allow moisture to dissipate.
- With continued use, the filling will gradually settle and may feel thinner over time. The best care is to air it out (with the cover) under sunlight for about 2 hours on each side between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sun-drying helps release absorbed moisture, restoring its fluffiness, elasticity, and natural softness. If sun-drying is not possible, hang it or place it indoors where it can receive as much sunlight as possible. Using a futon dryer is also recommended.
- While sun drying or airing the futon, please refrain from beating the futon. The beating motion may cause the cotton fiber structure to break, which may eventually damage the futon.
- The cotton filling is not intended for washing, so please always use it with a futon cover. If stains occur on the fabric, gently wipe the area with a damp cloth.
- When stored in a drawer or closet, the humidity in the closed space may enter the futon. Therefore, please do not store your futon back into the closet immediately after use, but wait a while for the water content to evaporate.
