To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Daitou Shingu, we’ve created a special Japanese gauze pajama in collaboration with the historic dyeing atelier Somenotsukasa Yoshioka, founded in the late Edo period.
Each piece is delivered in a traditional kiribako (paulownia wood box), carrying with it our heartfelt dedication. Made from high-quality gauze, these pajamas are ideal not only for personal use but also as a thoughtful gift

*As the fabric is pre-washed during the dyeing process, the measurements of this gauze pajama may differ slightly from our other styles. Before placing your order, please kindly refer to the size chart provided in the product photos.

Traditional Japanese Color: "Aizome" (Indigo Dyeing) — Weaving Tradition into Modern Comfort
The indigo color, achieved over more than six months, is created through skilled craftsmen’s hand-dyeing, resulting in each piece being finished like a true work of art.
This exquisite piece embodies the beauty of traditional colors born from plant-based natural dyes, bringing the essence of “Japanese colors” into the modern age.

The water used for dyeing is drawn from underground springs in Fushimi, Kyoto, and without any chemical dyes, the gauze—processed with traditional Japanese bleaching methods—is slowly dyed.
"Aiiro" (Indigo Blue) is a traditional color that has accompanied Japanese life since ancient times and has decorated their daily living. It is also a color that soothes the mind and brings a sense of peace, making it suitable to accompany sleep.
The Beautiful Indigo Color Created Over Time
The raw material for indigo dyeing is sukumo (fermented indigo leaves) sourced from Tokushima Prefecture, a major production area of indigo.

From harvest to fermentation, the aishi (indigo master) spends over six months preparing the sukumo. The dye is then aged in vats and carefully applied by hand by experienced craftspeople.
This time-intensive process and the devotion of those who create it are what bring forth the deep, luminous indigo hues.
A unique color born through a dialogue with the air
The color of indigo dye is born through exposure to air. The process is called oxidation.
Right after dyeing, the fabric appears greenish, but as it oxidizes, it gradually transforms into a deep indigo blue.

To achieve a beautifully even color without blotches, the dyeing process is carefully repeated many times over an extended period.

Why choose "Kyo Wazarashi Mensya"?
Kyo Wazarashi Mensya is a traditional Japanese cotton gauze fabric crafted using time-honored techniques.
Unlike fabrics processed under high temperature and pressure, the traditional “Wazarashi” process enhances the natural softness of cotton, allowing air to circulate between the fibers and creating a breathable, fluffy texture that remains gentle even after repeated washing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are these pajamas suitable for sensitive skin?
A: Yes. Made from 100% cotton and free from formaldehyde, they are gentle on delicate skin.
Q: What is the difference between two-layer and three-layer gauze pajamas?
A: Two-layer gauze pajamas are suitable for year-round wear. Three-layer gauze pajamas are thicker and ideal for winter or colder climates.
Q: Will the pajamas fade after washing?
A: Because natural dyes are used, the color may fade if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods. Please always dry the garment in the shade.
Some color fading or color transfer may also occur. We recommend washing it separately from white or light-colored items.
